Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is one of the biggest process changes HMRC has introduced for sole traders and landlords. Many Mid-Ulster businesses already know VAT MTD. Income Tax MTD extends the digital records idea to personal trading and property income, with quarterly updates and a final declaration at the end of the year.
Who is in scope
Mandation is phased by income thresholds. If you are a sole trader or landlord near or above the published figures, you should assume digital records and periodic updates will apply to you. Thresholds and dates change, so we review the latest HMRC position when we plan your Making Tax Digital readiness.
Partnerships and more complex structures need a tailored review. Do not rely on a neighbour's timeline. If you also run a limited company, keep company filings and personal MTD duties separate in your planning, even when the same accountant handles both.
What changes in practice
You keep digital records of income and expenses in compatible software (or bridging tools where allowed), submit quarterly updates, then complete an end-of-period statement and final declaration. That is a different rhythm from a single January Self Assessment sprint.
As a Xero Silver Partner, Gortreagh helps clients choose software, set coding routines and test submissions before live deadlines. If VAT MTD is already running smoothly in Xero, much of the discipline transfers. Our note on VAT thresholds covers the registration side for growing firms.
Records that survive an HMRC check
MTD is not only about sending numbers. It is about being able to show a digital trail from bank feed to category to quarterly update. Mixed paper and spreadsheet habits are what cause pain when HMRC asks questions.
Landlords should separate property income and costs by property where practical. Sole traders should stop dumping everything into a single 'sundry' pot. Those habits also make ordinary Personal Tax returns cleaner.
Start before you must
Clean bank feeds, consistent expense categories and a named process owner in your business make MTD manageable. Waiting until the first compulsory quarter is how people invent processes under pressure.
We can audit your current setup and give you a practical rollout plan for Cookstown, Dungannon or Magherafelt operations. Mention MTD on the contact form and we will review readiness with you. Monthly management accounts habits help here too, because the books stay current all year.
"MTD is not just an IT project. It is a tax compliance change that needs software and judgement in the same conversation."
